After a down month of April, the Metals Service
Center Institute reports a 9.7% growth of steel shipped in the United States
from May 2011. U.S. Service Centers moved 3,842.2 thousand tons of steel in May
2012. For the year, centers have moved 18,578 thousand tons, a 7.5% increase
from the same time in 2011.
Steel inventories were at 9,080.3 thousand tons at the end of May 2012, a 9.5%
increase from the same time last year, but a 0.7% decrease from April
2012.
There was a 6.8% increase in aluminum shipments in May, with 136.1 thousand
tons being shipped by service centers. For year-to-date 2012, 664.2 thousand
tons have been shipped, a 5.6% increase from the same time in 2011.
