Industrial Information Resources: An analysis of industrial plant closures vs. start-ups by IIR shows a net loss of 40 plants in the five-year period 1996-2000. IIR counted 3,050 U.S. plants at the end of 2000, compared with 3,134 in 1996. Heaviest losses were in the Southeast region, which lost 170 manufacturing facilities. The Great Lakes region had the most vibrant performance, gaining 103.
