IAPMO adds ESPRI to bolster research and innovation in water, plumbing systems

The company hopes adding the building water quality institute ESPRI will expand public health efforts.

IAPMO announced the Environmental Science, Policy and Research Institute (ESPRI), an organization dedicated to safeguarding public health through the improved management of building water systems, is the newest addition to The IAPMO Group.

Founded to address the critical but often overlooked arena of water quality in building water systems, ESPRI has worked to develop best practices for the entire lifecycle of these systems in settings such as multifamily housing, hospitals, office buildings, convention centers, schools, hotels and museums. Unlike organizations focused solely on drinking water, wastewater or stormwater, ESPRI fills a unique and vital role in protecting water quality within buildings themselves.

ESPRI will become a part of IAPMO’s Technical Services and Research team, strengthening IAPMO’s research capabilities as the preeminent authority bridging science, policy and standards to ensure a safer built environment. ESPRI joining IAPMO aligns with the launch of IAPMO’s Innovation and Research Fund, which brings together industry-leading companies, academic institutions, philanthropic groups, and individuals committed to the belief that technological innovation holds the key to improving the quality of life in the communities where we live and work. Through collaboration and cutting-edge research, the fund addresses pressing challenges in areas such as water access and environmental safety, among others.

“ESPRI is excited to join IAPMO and support IAPMO's efforts to protect public health and advance building water science,” said Dr. Jen Clancy, chief scientist of ESPRI. “Joining IAPMO will help us meet our mission of improving the connection between public water systems and their customers and promoting healthy water, all the way to the tap.”

ESPRI has a collaborative approach, partnering with building owners and managers, water utilities, regulatory agencies and occupants to promote public health and water safety. Its leadership includes experts with decades of experience in environmental science and water system management. ESPRI has worked with organizations including the Water Research Foundation, the Association of State Drinking Water Administrators, the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and the U.S. EPA.

“ESPRI is a welcome addition to the IAPMO family,” said IAPMO CEO Dave Viola. “Both IAPMO and ESPRI have established a name for themselves in the realm of promoting public health and safety, and by working together collaboratively, we can make a positive impact — particularly in the realm of water quality in premise plumbing systems.”

The integration of ESPRI marks a significant step forward in IAPMO’s commitment to protecting public health through science, policy, and innovation in water systems.
