Input prices into stainless PFF are mixed. LME nickel inventories hit 6-year lows again in May at just below 165,470 tons (179,000 in the last update), a continued downward trend. Spot nickel prices were trading in the $5.41/lb. range in mid-May ($5.87 in the last update).
Producer prices for HDPE pipe were down -.6% M/M (.4% last month) and were down -.7% Y/Y (up .4% Y/Y last month). Plastic pipe fittings and unions were down -.6% M/M (.6% last month) and up 5.4% Y/Y (up 7.6% last month).
Current situation: Valve prices, according to the Producer Price Index, were unchanged month-over-month in April. On a year-over-year basis, prices were up 3.3%.
In general, strong distributor inventories combined with substantial market uncertainty have created moderate demand softening. Domestic manufacturers see a flat near-term future.
