Obituary: Charles Goldberg, DPHA founding member
Charles “Charlie” Goldberg, founding member of DPHA, Council of Fellows member and Union Hardware president, died Nov. 13, at the age of 83.
After completing his service in the U.S. Army in 1954, Goldberg joined the family business in Washington, D.C.’s retail district. At the time it was a traditional hammer-and-nails hardware store, started by his father, Abraham, in 1914. By the late-1960s, Goldberg had added a wide selection of decorative hardware to the business and started Union Hardware’s Decorator Center. He opened a second location in Bethesda, Md., in 1972.
Goldberg also helped to form a small decorative plumbing and hardware trade association, which later became a segment of the National Kitchen and Bath Association. In 2001, he was a major supporter of the formation of the Decorative Plumbing & Hardware Association.
Donations may be made to the DPHA Council of Fellows Memorial Scholarship Foundation in memory of Charles Goldberg.
