Heating, Cooling Equipment Shipments Drop in October

Cooling and heating equipment shipments dip slightly beginning of 3Q 2010.

Although a comparison of month to month shipments for heating and cooling equipment showed a decrease in October 2010 from October 2009, overall year-to-date shipments were on the up, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

Residential Water Heaters

U.S. shipments of residential gas water heaters for October 2010 decreased 14 percent, to 268,723 units, down from 310,857 units shipped in October 2009.  Residential electric water heater shipments decreased 13 percent in October 2010, to 272,170 units, down from 311,198 units shipped in October 2009.

U.S. shipments of residential gas water heaters increased 6 percent, to 3,272,572 units, compared to 3,089,501 units shipped during the same period in 2009. Residential electric water heater shipments increased 0.04 percent year-to-date, to 3,126,597 units, compared to 3,125,233 units shipped during the same period in 2009.

Commercial Water Heaters

Commercial gas water heater shipments decreased 11 percent in October 2010, to 5,333 units, compared with 6,017 units shipped in October 2009. Commercial electric water heater shipments decreased 4 percent in October 2010, to 4,366 units, down from 4,543 units shipped in October 2009.

Year-to-date U.S. shipments of commercial gas water heaters increased 4 percent, to 65,824 units, compared with 63,517 units shipped during the same period in 2009. Year-to-date commercial electric water heater shipments increased 3 percent to 49,222 units, up from 47,708 units shipped during the same period in 2009. 

Warm Air Furnaces

U.S. shipments of gas warm air furnaces for October 2010 decreased 7 percent, to 219,677 units, down from 236,599 units shipped in October 2009. Oil warm air furnace shipments decreased 20 percent, to 5,745 units in October 2010, down from 7,163 units shipped in October 2009.

However, again, the biggest increase year to date was seen on the warm air side. U.S. shipments of gas warm air furnaces increased 13 percent, to 1,925,791 units, compared with 1,708,969 units shipped during the same period in 2009. Year-to-date U.S. shipments of oil warm air furnaces increased 6 percent to 43,391 units, compared with 40,867 units shipped during the same period in 2009.

Central Air Conditioners and Air-Source Heat Pumps

Year-to-date combined shipments of residential central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps increased 0.2 percent, to 4,539,001 units, up from 4,531,404 units shipped in October 2009. Year-to-date shipments of central air conditioners decreased 2 percent, to 3,033,495 units, down from 3,100,105 units shipped during the same period in 2009. The year-to-date total for heat pump shipments increased 5 percent, to 1,505,506 units, up from 1,431,299 units shipped during the same period in 2009.
