Residential Heating, Cooling Equipment Shipments Down In June

U.S. factory shipments of residential cooling and heating equipment declined in June, compared with the same month a year ago. Results also showed a drop on the commercial end for these products as well, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

Warm Air Furnaces

U.S. factory shipments of gas-fired, warm-air furnaces in June totaled 203,937, a 12.5 percent drop compared with the same month last year. For the year-to-date, gas furnace shipments totaled 895,614, a 15 percent drop compared with the same period last year. See full chart here.
Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 4,027, a 5 percent drop compared with June 2008 totals. Oil furnace shipments for the year-to-date totaled 18,469, a 21.6 percent drop compared with the same period last year.

Storage Water Heaters

Residential electric water heater shipments for June totaled 328,330, a 24.6 percent drop from the same month a year ago. Residential gas water heater shipments totaled 310,495, a 27.5 percent decrease compared with shipments for the same month last year. For the year-to-date, about 1.9 million residential gas water heaters have been shipped, an 11.4 percent drop compared with the same period a year ago. For the year-to-date, about 1.9 residential electric storage water heaters have been shipped, a 13.2 percent drop compared to the same period last year.

Commercial gas water heater shipments for June totaled 6,320, dropping 35 percent compared with the same month last year, while commercial electric water heater shipments totaled 5,065, a 27 percent drop compared with the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, commercial electric water heater shipments (29,315) are 19 percent behind total shipments of this product during the same period last year (36,026). Commercial gas water heater shipments (40,331) for the year-to-date are down 17 percent, compared with the same period a year ago (48,672).

Central Air Conditioners and Air-Source Heat Pumps

Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps for June totaled 788,825, down 17 percent compared with the same time last year (Revised June 2008 shipments: 957,072). For the year-to-date, combined shipments totaled 2,785,134, down 18 percent compared with the same period last year (Revised YTD Jan. - June 2008 shipments: 3,395,410).
Heat pump shipments for June totaled 229,716, down 15 percent from the same month a year ago (Revised June 2008 shipments: 271,691). For the year-to-date, heat pump shipments totaled 917,460, a 13 percent drop compared with the same period last year (Revised YTD Jan. - June 2008 shipments: 1,058,614).
