A union push to restrict the use of corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST) for gas piping in California suffered a big setback with a Jan. 31 public notice by the state's Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) that it will continue to recognize CSST as an approved gas piping material in the new California Plumbing Code. At first HCD recommended additional study, but "now believes that no further study is necessary to continue the existing approved use of CSST." Its recommendation is subject to a 45-day written comment period that expires on March 14. The Building Standards Commission is scheduled to consider the recommendation at a formal hearing on March 20.
