Step up your Google Business Profile

Google isn’t just for your customers; leverage the power of a clean GBP.

As a wholesaler, you're no stranger to the importance of a Google Business Profile (GBP) for your customers. Every HVAC and plumbing contractor needs one to be found easily on Google to acquire new customers. It's practically a given that they rely on it to attract local customers. But here's a question for you: have you ever thought about how *you* could benefit from using Google too?

You may already have a strong reputation in the industry and a well-established brand offlineI take, but the next time a customer looks you up for directions to attend one of your training sessions or pick up a part, what impression are you leaving?

In today's world, first impressions and repeat impressions are often made online — through a quick search for basic information like hours of operations, phone number, website, or to get driving directions. Not to mention, whatever else pops up next to your GBP when someone types in your business name.

The question is: Does your Google Business Profile reflect the thriving, professional operation you've worked so hard to build?

First impressions (and ALL impressions) matter

Think about it from the perspective of one of your customers searching for your business information. Maybe they're looking for directions to your supply house or trying to find out when you open or close before heading over to pick up a part. When they pull up your GBP, are they met with clear, up-to-date information that makes their job easier? Or are they met with confusion — outdated hours, inaccurate contact details, or even worse, a smattering of bad reviews?

A neglected online profile can sow seeds of doubt even if you've got a great relationship with your customers in person. If the information on your GBP is outdated or incomplete, what's stopping them from wondering, "Could I get better service somewhere else?" Don't let that happen. Your GBP should leave no room for hesitation — it should inspire confidence from the very first impression.

Reviews: Showcase the good, address the bad

Let's talk reviews. You know your customers need them for your business because 90% of consumers make buying decisions based on them. But what about you? You aren't B2C you are B2B. Reviews don't matter, right? Well, they kind of do.

Now, it's inevitable — in any business, especially one where you deal with contractors of varying experience levels — you'll receive the occasional bad review if you haven't already. Maybe it's from a contractor who didn't pay their bill, someone who was frustrated over an inventory delay, or a local resident upset about one of your delivery trucks' driving skills. Whatever the case, those negative reviews can leave a mark or a lingering bad taste in your customers' mouths.

But what about all the satisfied contractors, technicians, and employees who come by your supply house regularly? Encourage them to leave positive reviews! Their testimonials can drown out any negativity and reinforce the fact that your business serves happy, loyal customers just like them.

This is especially important if you're being referred by a customer of yours who is the mentor for a new HVAC contractor just starting out. Just because your customer trusts you doesn't mean the younger and newly minted HVAC contractor will look past your bad reviews when looking for a trustworthy supplier. A stream of updated, positive reviews helps build your credibility and shows that your business is actively serving its community.

Strengthening your GBP

So, how can you use your Google Business Profile to its fullest potential? Start with the basics — make sure your hours, contact information, and location details are up-to-date. Consistency is key. A contractor should never have to second-guess whether you're open or not. Next, consider adding posts to your GBP. Google Posts allow you to showcase what's happening at your supply house. Are you hosting a training on the latest energy-efficient systems? Throw up a post. Are you planning a customer appreciation day? Let people know about it. Are you participating in a local community event? Let them see you actively serving their customer base.

Your GBP helps build trust, showing that you're not just competing on price but delivering real value to your customers and the community at large.

Don't underestimate the power of visual content. Photos of your business, your customers in the store, or shots from a recent event go a long way in personalizing your business. It makes your operation feel approachable, active and engaged with the local HVAC community. Every touchpoint on your profile is an opportunity to show the world that you're not just a supply house — you're a thriving hub for HVAC professionals.

Building trust with prospective customers

A well-maintained GBP isn't just for your existing customers; it's also a powerful tool for prospective ones. Picture this: one of your territory managers is out trying to win over a new HVAC contractor. When TM looks up your business, they should be able to point to your Google profile with pride, showing that your operation is professional, reliable, and deeply invested in the community.

Contrast that with a competitor who offers nothing more than cut-rate pricing. A poorly managed profile from that competitor — with bad reviews and little-to-no engagement — sends the message that they might not be worth the savings after all. Your GBP, on the other hand, helps build trust, showing that you're not just competing on price but delivering real value to your customers and the community at large.

Becoming a trusted advisor

Lastly, to be seen as more than just an order-taker, your contractors need to trust you when you are recommending vendors like software, marketing services, payment processors, etc. If they don't see you as organized and reliable, they'll question the quality of your advice. As with products, trust is critical—they'll only follow your guidance if they believe you've thoroughly vetted these vendors. By consistently demonstrating expertise and care in all areas, you position yourself as a trusted advisor and a valuable partner in scaling their business, not just a supplier. Ultimately, this will foster loyalty and long-term relationships with your customers, but it will also build from a foundation of trust.

Final thoughts

As an HVAC or Plumbing distributor, you understand the importance of an excellent reputation. Don't let your online presence fall by the wayside. Take the time to update your Google Business Profile, respond to reviews, and showcase all the great things happening at your supply house. The next time a contractor looks you up, make sure they see a business that's vibrant, engaged, and fully committed to providing the best possible experience.

Invest in your online presence. It's not just for your customers — it's for you too!
