Eye on safety: Safety education at ASA

By Diana Bautz
March 9, 2021

If there is one rule of safety, it’s that what you think you know can make you dangerous. Therefore, safety rules and regulations should be revisited and reviewed often. Staying sharp with your safety knowledge not only reduces risk, incidents, accidents, injury and death, it keeps hazards and safety threat costs low for your company. Safety is not something to take for granted. Just like a fire must be tended to keep burning safely and brightly, so must your safety knowledge.

With this in mind, the Education Foundation team at American Supply Association offers many OSHA-based safety courses for you and your employees. Your workplace safety culture begins with a well-trained workforce, and ASA can help you with those goals.

ASA offers courses for drivers, forklift operators, slips, trips and falls, back safety, ladder safety, workplace inspections, active shooters, drug free workplace training, PPE, incident investigation, OSHA record keeping, fire safety and prevention, DOT drug and alcohol training, first aid, load securement and distribution, safety orientation, sexual harassment training, violence in the workplace training and many other topics for all areas of work and positions within your company.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2019, workplace fatalities increased by 2% from 2018 to a total of 5,333 deaths. That is the largest annual number since 2007. Fatalities among workers age 55 and over increased by 8%, for a total of 38% of all workplace fatalities. And fatalities among Hispanic or Latino workers increased to 13%, the highest number since 1992. Additionally, drivers, sales workers and truck drivers accounted for the highest fatal occupational injury count since the BLS started recording this classification with 1,005 fatalities. Implementing and enforcing a safety training program within your company can help you and your staff from becoming a statistic.

ASA strives to keep up to date on all the latest safety compliance rules and regulations so we can help make your workplace the safest around. We work with OSHA and our Safety Committee of Subject Matter Experts to bring you the latest information in safety news and updates. ASA works with member safety SME’s on our Safety Committee to review safety standards and OSHA updates to bring you tools to keep your company informed on safety best practices and regulations. Even if you don’t have a full safety team to rely on at your own business, as a member of ASA, you are able to draw on the expertise of your fellow members and safety professionals to keep abreast of the latest and greatest in safety education. Check out the safety section of ASA.net to read more about the tools we offer and the ASA Safety Award program, one of the many benefits of being an ASA member.

ASA knows that keeping your workers safe is your priority, so we have assembled an extensive list of best practices and OSHA-based safety courses. Conveniently offered online through American Supply Association University, you can assign, track and run reports on your staff’s safety training to ensure your employees stay sharp and go home safe at night. ASA safety training is an affordable solution and is offered in both English and Spanish for many courses. Since safety does not stop at the docks, we offer safety courses not only for warehouse and driver staff, but also for your office employees.

With all the hours we spend at work, it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure safety in the workplace by reaching the common goal of learning and practicing high safety standards. ASA can help you design training programs for all your educational needs, including safety. And just like in safety, if you see something, say something! If there is a topic you need but you don’t see, let us know and we’ll make it available so you can keep your staff safe.

To review our safety course menu, head to ASA.net, Education, Shop Store, and under “Browse by Category” choose “Safety.” Keep checking for regular updates and additions to our safety course curriculum or let us know if there’s something you need, and we’ll get it! While you are visiting our website, check out our Safety web pages too! Pair the safety articles, tool talks, webinars, resources and best practices with our courses to enhance your safety knowledge and education. Keep checking back for updates and remember to fill out your application for ASA’s Safety Award! ASA is here to help you not only train your staff, be profitable and endure our ever-changing times, we are here to help keep you safe and sound.
