Brain power at the American Supply Association’s Spring Forum ’14.

Aaron & Co.’s Mike Laudino and Lindsey Portnoy-Rodner know all eyes are on them. Laudino, 32, and Portnoy-Rodner, 28, are third-generation executives at the Piscataway, N.J.-based distributor of plumbing, heating and cooling products.

During my working years, I always have been one of the younger employees at jobs I’ve held. I barely was old enough to vote at my first regular job that took me through my last semester of high school and all four years of college.

In this month’s issue of Supply House Times, you’ll notice quite a bit of attention being given to the next generation of leaders in our industry. This goes to show just how important a topic this is and will continue to be.

For decades, ASA’s Y.E. Division has hosted the annual Spring Forum to connect the people who represent the next generation of principals and owners for our industry’s wholesalers, manufacturers and independent manufacturer representatives.

Earlier this year, I embarked on several busy weeks of travel which involved representing ASA at a series of industry events throughout the country. As my predecessors as ASA president can tell you, this involves providing association updates at various regional meetings, including gatherings of the Midwest Distributors Association, the Wholesalers Association of the Northeast, the North Central Wholesalers Association, the Southern Wholesalers Association, the Western Suppliers Association and others.

A reoccurring theme of late in the PHCP/PVF wholesale distribution industry has been the need to attract young talent into the workforce.
