The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (UPSC) announced voluntary recalls of York International Corp.'s Unitary Products Group's Coleman, Coleman Evcon and Red T brand gas furnaces. These furnaces can overheat, causing heat-exchanger cracking, burn-through and, in extreme cases, furnace wrapper burn-through. This can lead to heating and possible burning of the drywall and other combustibles adjacent to the furnace, which poses a fire and smoke hazard to consumers.

York said in a statement field inspections and furnace upgrades have been underway since September, and that it began communication efforts of the problem months prior to the UPSC announcement.

York has received 27 reports of fires, some resulting in extensive property damage that could be related to these hazards. There have been no injuries reported.

The company is working with distributors to locate owners of the recalled products. Users should not use the heating function of the furnaces until they have been inspected and repaired. Call York at 888-665-4640 or visit www.dgatprogram.com for more information on free inspections and repairs.
