Manufacturers and Schools Team Up to Modernize HVACR Workforce

Competitors in the marketplace, partners in the classroom, a California initiative is proving that when manufacturers and educators work together, everyone wins.

The HVACR industry is evolving at a pace that's leaving classrooms behind. New refrigerants, variable-speed systems, and high-performance heat pumps have become everyday realities on the job, yet many training programs still rely on technology from a previous era. That gap isn't just an inconvenience; it's a workforce crisis in the making.

"The classroom should be where technicians first encounter next-generation technology, not the customer's home."

TECH Clean California's Heat Pump Ready program aims to change that. By uniting educators and manufacturers around a shared mission, the initiative equips HVACR schools with the training, curriculum and real-world equipment students will actually use after graduation. Qualifying schools are eligible for up to $8,000 worth of heat pump equipment.

Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, Mitsubishi Electric, and ESCO Institute, have decided to work together for a common cause: preparing the next generation of skilled technicians. Their bet is a straightforward one. A stronger workforce benefits every manufacturer, every contractor and every customer.

With nearly 100 instructors now participating in the program's first two rounds, the momentum is real.

For contractors, graduates from Heat Pump Ready schools arrive with hands-on experience on current systems, shrinking onboarding time and accelerating productivity. Students can graduate with Energy Skilled credentials that make them stronger job prospects.

The message to educators is clear: the resources are there. The industry is investing. Programs that embrace modern heat pump instruction will produce graduates who are more capable, more confident, and more competitive in a rapidly changing field.

Round two of the training is underway, and a third round is expected to be launched this fall. California educators and contractors can learn more about participating and participating schools at TECH Clean California Heat Pump Ready.
