When you sit down with the retired veterans of our industry, the self-proclaimed “White Hairs,” you will hear stories that feel larger than life to today’s younger leaders. They talk about the arrival of the fax machine, a revolutionary device that once made communication feel nearly instantaneous. They remember the screeching sound of dial-up internet and the thrill of hearing “You’ve got mail” for the very first time.

They share memories of outside sales reps who mapped out every payphone on their route, with buckets of quarters riding in the passenger seat. They recall car phones that required roof antennas and weighed as much as a shoebox filled with bricks. They also remember the Atlas road maps that lived in every salesperson’s car, filled with the roads of all fifty states. At the time, these tools were the height of innovation and resourcefulness.

Today, the world has changed dramatically. We carry powerful computers in our pockets. We host virtual meetings with people across the globe in real time. CRM platforms, market updates, and live analytics are only a few clicks away. What once felt futuristic is now a normal part of how we do business.

That brings us to an important question. What is the next great tool that will shape the future of our industry?

The answer is artificial intelligence.

AI is not something that is coming soon. It is already here. And it is transforming how we work, how we prepare, and how we connect with others.

One thing I often reflect on is time. Time is our most valuable resource. When we meet with wholesale customers, contractors, or factory principals, we must be respectful of the time they share with us. My father always said, “There is no substitute for preparation,” and that truth has never been more relevant than it is today.

We must be more prepared than ever. We must use data and insights to bring real value to every conversation. Our customers are just as busy as we are, and they need information that helps them grow, make smart decisions, and succeed in a competitive market.

This is where AI becomes a powerful tool and a true advantage.

AI allows us to become trusted resources by providing the right information at the right time. It helps us walk into sales calls, training sessions, and presentations with insights that benefit both sides. It raises the level of service we provide and helps us stand out in a crowded space.

When you consistently offer real value, you become more than just a vendor. You become a trusted partner. And when challenges arise, your customers will choose to face them with someone they trust, rather than someone who only offers words without action. Trust is built through preparation, consistency, and a genuine desire to help others succeed.

AI allows us to become trusted resources by providing the right information at the right time. It helps us walk into sales calls, training sessions, and presentations with insights that benefit both sides.

It is important to remember that sales is still a contact sport. It thrives on relationships, honest conversations, and meaningful follow-ups. AI will never replace the human element, but it will help us strengthen it.

Use AI to focus on what matters most. Let it help you analyze your performance, uncover new opportunities, and identify areas for improvement. It can show you which products are thriving and which ones may need support. It can help you deliver your message with clarity using visuals like charts and graphs that make your insights easier to understand and act upon.

At its core, AI is not about replacing people. It is about helping people do their best work. It is here to support you, help you prepare more effectively, and bring more value to every interaction you have.

This is your moment. The next generation of leaders is not only stepping up but ready to thrive. With the right mindset and the right tools, the future is not just bright. It is full of incredible opportunities.
