March 22 is World Water Day

March 22, 2018

On March 22, we recognize and advocate for the sustainable utilization of freshwater resources. World Water Day was initiated by the UN in 1993, and since then, it's been an annual call to action to improve and effectively manage our use of water, and pioneer innovative solutions for water scarcity and pollution.

Companies like Duravit — who continually champion the cause of sustainability — especially as it pertains to water conservation, are celebrating today with its WaterSense products. With bathrooms responsible for more than 50% of the home’s indoor water use, Duravit has long prioritized water-saving capabilities and environmental initiatives.

As a 10-year partner with WaterSense, Duravit has been able to save a cumulative 2.1 trillion gallons of water and more than $46.3 billion in water and energy bills. WaterSense products use at least 20% less water than their counterparts, and all Duravit wall- and floor-mounted toilets are WaterSense approved. This endorsement means that these Duravit products comply with the EPA’s rigorous performance mandate for High Efficiency Toilets (HET), which is 1.28 or fewer gallons per flush (gpf). Duravit’s wall-mount toilets, featuring dual-flush technology, allow for an effective 1.1 gpf. This lower than average amount still maintains high performance results and would save a family of four 13,000 gallons of water per year.

10 Simple Tips to Conserve Water

If you’re looking to celebrate today by conserving water, bluefrog Plumbing + Drain (bluefrog), reminds us that water is not a luxury everyone has. While many people in the world exist on three gallons of water per day, we can use that in just one flush of a toilet.

Changing a few small habits around the house can be a simple way to not only conserve water, but also save money. Recognizing this, Gary Findley, CEO of bluefrog, is leading the charge on sharing cash-saving tips for homeowners and encouraging plumbers to think like a conservationist.

Conservation tips include:

  1. Choose efficient fixtures.
  2. Reuse towels at home and at hotels.
  3. Quickly fix leaky faucets and toilets.
  4. Use a broom rather than a hose to clean off sidewalks and driveways.
  5. Check sprinklers to be sure they’re not watering sidewalks or streets.
  6. Always adjust the settings on your washing machine for the proper load size.
  7. Cover pools to avoid water loss due to evaporation.
  8. Put mulch around trees and plants.
  9. Avoid watering when it’s windy.
  10.  Keep an eye out on your water bill to spot leaks early. Spikes in water usage usually indicate a leak.

Findley says, “By changing just a few simple habits we can all do our part in conserving water and we’ll also see an immediate difference in our own pockets. Conserving water and helping customers save money is a winning situation for us, so we’re happy to share our expertise to help make a difference.”
