One of the highlights of the first annual ISH North America in Toronto this month will be an exhibit of selected "Design Plus" award winners from Europe. Messe Frankfurt (the organizers of ISH North America) and Hanover's if Industrie Forum Design honored a variety of new products at the most recent ISH show in Frankfurt, Germany.
Awards were presented in the sanitation, heating, installation technology and measuring, testing, control and regulation technology product categories. The Design Plus label is awarded for particularly innovative design ideas and products that break new ground in terms of form and functionality. Design Plus products showcased at ISH North America have been recognized as some of the leading new products in today's marketplace.
Adjacent to the Design Plus awards exhibit on the show floor will be a New Product Showcase featuring the latest and most creative new products launched in North America in the past year. A number of exhibiting companies have announced that they will use ISH North America as a launch pad for their new products, including Alsons Corporation, American Standard, Bradford White Corporation, Camus Hydronics, Canplas Industries, Crown Boiler, DynaQuip Controls, E&E Elektronik, Glentronics, Grundfos Canada, Halsey Taylor, Heatlink, Jomar International, Liberty Pumps, Mansfield Plumbing, Midland Metal Manufacturing, Peerless Heater, Prelude Systems, Roberts-Gordon, San-Ei Faucet, Watts Industries, Wheeler-Rex and Whirlaway.
To make the New Product Showcase even more interesting, a jury panel of industry experts from the three ISH North America partners - The Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors - National Association, the Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating and the American Supply Association - will judge the products and present awards.
ISH North America, the international trade show for the kitchen and bath, plumbing, piping, heating, hydronics and air conditioning industry, expects to attract more than 18,000 visitors from 20 countries, including wholesale distributors, contractors, builders, engineers, architects, designers and building and plant managers. More than 400 exhibitors will display products.
Seminar Program
The leading experts in their fields will share their knowledge and ideas in a comprehensive educational program involving more than 50 seminars. Topics will include hydronic heating, kitchen and bath best practices, construction contracts, Legionnaire's Disease, indoor air quality, water treatment, medical gas piping, sales and marketing, and installation trends and techniques.

A Little Bit Of History
Many Americans will arrive in Toronto via the Lester B. Pearson International Airport. Here is some information about Lester Bowles Pearson, for whom the airport was named.Lester B.Pearson was born on April 23,1897, in Newtonbrook, near Toronto. He attended the University of Toronto and after serving in World War I, he continued his education at Oxford University. He was a lecturer in history in Toronto until 1928.
Pearson joined the Canadian Department of External Affairs as First Secretary in 1928, and became Canada's first ambassador to Washington in 1945.
The next year he returned to Canada and became Under-Secretary of State for External Affairs. In 1948 he was elected to a seat in Parliament for Algoma East. Pearson took an active part in the United Nations Organization and was president of The Seventh UN General Assembly in 1952.
He was Canada's Minister for External Affairs during the Suez Canal crisis of 1956. In October 1956 the Suez Canal area, which earlier had been seized by Egypt, was attacked by Israeli troops, backed by Britain and France. This situation could have led to a world war. Pearson proposed a United Nations Emergency Force to stabilize the danger zone. He offered the services of Canadian troops as part of a collective force. The UN adopted his proposal and in spite of difficulties, the UN Force was successful in restoring order to the area.
In 1957 Pearson was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his proposal to send a UN peacekeeping force to the Suez Canal area.
From 1963 to 1968 he served as the 14th prime minister of Canada. While Pearson was in office, the Canadian flag was adopted, the Canada Assistance Plan, Medicare and the Canada Pension Plan were introduced. He is also responsible for the introduction of bilingualism and biculturalism in Canada. Pearson died in 1972.
