Cap & Trade Prospects Look Dim

One of the most contentious pieces of legislation around -- and potentially the most harmful to industry and our economy in general -- is the so-called cap-and-trade bill that was rushed through the House but has been stalled in the Senate for months.
According to Intrade Gazette, an online newsletter of the Intrade Prediction Market, the bill, which would establish and cap-and-trade system to limit greenhouse gas emissions, is stalled in the Senate as Republicans
boycott committee hearings.
Chairman of the Environment and Public Works committee Barbara Boxer (D-CA) is
considering using a loophole in committee rules to bypass the boycott and approve the bill. Doubts remain that the bill would pass a floor vote however. Ben Nelson (D-NE) has
stated that cap-and-trade will not pass during this session of Congress. |

U.S. Levels Highest Ever Duties On China OCTG The U.S. International Trade Commission last week imposed
preliminary antidumping duties on Chinese makers of OCTG pipe
ranging from 36.5% t0 99%. The duties apply to imports that totaled $2.6 billion in 2008, making it reportedly the largest trade sanction ever imposed by the U.S. These are in addition to previous countervailing duties of 10.7% to 30.7% the ITC announced in September on these products. The action was in response to a petition filed by six U.S. steel pipe manufacturers earlier this year.

Tech Tip #34 by Gregg Marshall
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.
Blog to Connect with Your Customers
I find it hard to believe that there are still businesses without a web site. Having some web presence seems as important to a business as having a telephone number.
I know that a lot of businesses don't do a web site because the quotes they've gotten are unreasonably high.
There is an alternative that is inexpensive (or even free). Start a blog. Blogs started off as a sort of on-line diary that anyone could read. They have transformed into a search engine friendly way to market your business. Some well established blogs are getting over a million unique visitors a month. Certain blogs have scooped major news services, and are often cited as one of the reasons for declining newspaper circulation.
If you want to start blogging, go to one of the major free sites, Blogger (owned by Google) at http://blogger.com, Typepad at http://typepad.com, or Wordpress at
http://wordpress.com. In about 2 minutes you can register a new account and be blogging.
With their WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) interfaces, formatting a blog post is really very easy. Let your friends, customers, etc know where to look for your blog and you will soon have a following.
Over 100,000 new blogs are started every day. Many get a few posts and then become neglected. If you are serious about using your blog to market your business you need to be reliable about making posts to it. Set up a posting schedule, at least once a week is recommended. Use your Outlook calendar to set a weekly reminder to do your post. Write a few spare blog posts to keep "in the bank" for weeks when you don't have time or inclination to write something. Just don't stop once you start.
Blogging can be a great way to have a web presence, just don't neglect it. For an example, my blog is at http://vendor-tech.blogspot.com.

What's The Industry Buzzing About?
One way to tell is to visit the website of Supply House Times
. If you scroll to the bottom of the lead page, you will find lists of the "Most E-Mailed" and "Most Popular Articles" (as measured by visitations). This gives a pretty good feel for what industry citizens regard as important.
For example, as of Tuesday, November 10, these were some of the "Most E-mailed" articles from the Supply House Times website.
