SB 1606 Would Ease Lawsuits Against Foreign Manufacturers On August 6, 2009
, the Foreign Manufacturer Legal Accountability Act of 2009 (S. 1606) was introduced by Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), along with Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), into the U.S. Senate. The bipartisan bill would make it easier to sue foreign manufacturers meeting certain criteria and is thought to be a reaction to widespread reports of defective consumer goods from China.
This summary by the renowned Chicago law firm Winston & Strawn is the best we've read about its genesis and particulars. Bonney Forge Revises OLET Specs, Power Piping Code
Bonney Forge has collaborated with the Pipe Fabrication Institute (PFI) to produce their 2008 Approved Release PFI Standard ES-49, "Guideline for Installation of Integrally Reinforced Branch Outlet Fittings," which covers in detail the basic welding procedure and recommended weld deposit criteria for OLET fittings. (Copies available upon request.)
Additionally, a revision has been proposed to B31.1 "Power Piping Code" clarifying the governing criteria used for weld size determination and provides depictions of some acceptable weld profile for "Integrally Reinforced Branch Outlet Connections."

Outokumpu Restructures Tubular Business To improve efficiency and cut costs, Outokumpu is restructuring its Stainless Tubular Business Unit (OSTP) by selling
its square and rectangular tube business in Jakobstad, Finland, to the Finnish company Stalatube Oy, a square and rectangular tube specialist. The tubes produced are not OSTP's core business and increasing the market share and product range would have required large investments, the company explained. Outokumpu also intends to move production from Jakobstad's old lines, where small welded pipes are produced, to the fully integrated laser annealing and pickling lines in Nyby, Sweden.

Tech Tip #30 by Gregg Marshall
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.
Save Money, Refill Ink Cartridges
Ever notice that sometimes you can buy a new printer for less than that replacement ink cartridge for it? The printer manufacturers went to the Gillette School of Marketing - give the printer (razor) away, the real profits are in the ink (razor blades). HP Ink is more expensive than oil or blood!
Worse, most of the cartridges that come with printers are what the industry calls "light loads," they don't have a full amount of ink or toner you get with a new cartridge.
Despite computers being heralded as leading to paperless offices, we print more and more each year. Frankly some things are easier to read on paper. Paper files away nicely. And you can read paper during take off and landing.
So if you don't want to have most of your office supplies budget going to printer ink and toner, what can you do?
One option is to switch from brand name ink cartridges to "house brands." While I'm sure there are a lot of people who will tell you the ink isn't as good, or the colors aren't right on, for most applications close is good enough.
I've also found that shopping on-line results in even less expensive "compatible" ink cartridges. For instance a friend's Epson CX9400 uses $35 Epson ink cartridges. The local Office Depot brand is about $15. Doing a Google products search netting cartridges for $1.99 each.
Of course if you really want to go cheap, try refilling your cartridges. Some cartridges have internal fuses or memory chips to record they have been used up, but if you don't let them run out you can often refill them. And some laser cartridges require burning a hole to refill them. But many are easy to refill, the office supply stores even sell refilling kits.

What's The Industry Buzzing About?
One way to tell is to visit the website of Supply House Times
. If you scroll to the bottom of the lead page, you will find lists of the "Most E-Mailed" and "Most Popular Articles" (as measured by visitations). This gives a pretty good feel for what industry citizens regard as important.
For example, as of Tuesday, September 8, these were some of the "Most E-mailed" articles from the Supply House Times website.

Hydronic Options for High Capacity Domestic Water
Heating:
The best mix of instantaneous capacity and
storage Presented by John Siegenthaler, PE
Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at 10am PT | 1pm ET
EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION only $49 thru September 3,
includes live webinar session and certificate of completion
This Webinar explains why the hydronics approach is superior to both
instantaneous water heating and massive storage-type systems. It shows you how
to configure and control a high capacity domestic water heating subsystem, and
how that subsystem can be easily expanded to handle several other common heating
loads. It gives you information that builds a case against competing options. If
your view of hydronics is limited to space heating, this Webinar will show you a
new profit opportunity. Learn

Integrating Geothermal Heat Pumps into Hydronic Heating/Cooling Systems Presented by John Siegenthaler, PE
Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 10am PT | 1pm ET
EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION only $49 thru September 3, includes live webinar session and certificate of completion
This Webinar will explore this combination in detail. You'll learn how to design systems that provide both hydronic heating and chilled water cooling. Design appropriate for both residential and larger commercial applications will be discussed. You'll see how the latest hydronics technology can be used to enhance performance of such systems. If you're ready to explore the complementary and profitable interface between hydronic technology and geothermal heat pumps this Webinar is for you.

Protection For Insulated Pipes
Cooper B-Line
has introduced the Snap 'N Shield, a new pipe hanger accessory that protects insulation from damage caused by rubbing against other pipes and fittings. In addition, Snap 'N Shield allows piping to expand and contract freely without damaging the surrounding insulation. Ideal for horizontal pipe runs, and designed for side-by-side installations, the 12" long shield snaps directly onto the trapeze channel and requires no tools or accessories. The Snap 'N Shield is UV-resistant and holds certifications for UL for USA and ULC for Canada. It also meets UL94 HB flammability standards. Typical applications include refrigeration, air conditioning and plumbing. |
