Causes Of Pipe Failure Examined broken pipes 3094675727_2bd63425b7_m

Noavaran Baspar (NAB) is an Iranian firm involved in pipe testing, including failure investigations. In a presentation at the Middle East Plastic Pipes 2009 conference, held in Dubai during June 2009, NAB drew the following conclusions based on a review of 5,000 cases:

  • 45% of pipe failures were due to wrong specification or poor materials;
  • 20% were due to manufacturing faults;
  • 20% due to incorrect system design;
  • 15% abuse of the pipe by the customer.

Many types of failure were analyzed, ranging from microcracks due to internal pressure, point loading or chemical exposure, to non-symmetric buckling fron longitudinal bending.

Tech Tip #28 by Gregg Marshall Gregg18a.lowres
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.

How To Create A Collaboration Network

I believe Ray Ozzie should be named the father of collaboration. Way back he created Lotus Notes, probably the first successful server-based collaboration platform. Then he created Groove, a peer-to-peer collaboration system that doesn't require any servers. He's currently Chief Software Architect at Microsoft.

What's so special about Groove? Jon Udell put it this way back in 2000:

Groove enables groups of collaborators to form in a decentralized, ad-hoc, administrator-less fashion, within or across corporate or other firewall/NAT-governed realms. Groove is a peer-empowering form of groupware. These spaces collect all the documents, messages, and applications ("tools") related to a group activity. Everything replicates to each member's computer.

But at $225 a user, jumping in to Groove for an ad-hoc project probably will keep the members collaborating via email.

There is an alternative that is free-Collanos Workplace (http://www.collanos.com/).

Using Collanos is really quite easy. You install it on your computer. You create a workspace for a project. You invite other people to participate (they get a link to download the software onto their computer).

You put files into the shared workspace, when the other people are on-line they get copies. If anyone makes a change, everyone else gets that updated version. The shared files can be just about anything. Plus you can keep a series of discussions, all nicely archived on everyone's computer.

Think of how you might be collaborating with people outside your company-other sales people, peer networking groups, etc. The price is right, download it and start experimenting.

What's The Industry Buzzing About?bees

One way to tell is to visit the website of Supply House Times . If you scroll to the bottom of the lead page, you will find lists of the "Most E-Mailed" and "Most Popular Articles" (as measured by visitations). This gives a pretty good feel for what industry citizens regard as important.

For example, as of Tuesday, August 11, these were the five "Most E-mailed" articles visited at the Supply House Times website.

PVF Data

48.9% -- July's ISM index  reported by the Institute for Supply Management last week. Although still below the 50% mark representing expansion, the July index rose from 44.8% in June and was the strongest since September. More detailed data indicates that the manufacturing downturn is coming to an end, as both production and new orders rose above 50%. The ISM index has been improving slowly since hitting a low of 32.9% in December. The index was last above 50% in January 2008.

500 million -- projected tonnage of crude steel production in China during 2009, according to the China Iron & Steel Association. That would beat an earlier projection of 460 million tons. Steel production jumped 13% in July, the third consecutive record monthly high, reported Bloomberg News.

1,161/2,442 -- There were 1,161 rotary drilling rigs operating in the U.S. and Canada as of the week ending August 7. That's less that half the 2,442 reported in the same period last year.
