'09 Stainless Output Seen Falling By 20%
The British metals tracking and forecasting firm MEPS predicts global stainless steel production
at 20.8 million tons in 2009. The Western world figure (excluding China and Russia), at 13.5 million tons, would be the lowest since 1994 and the third consecutive annual decline in stainless steel output. U.S. production is expected to finish at around 1.5 million tons, the lowest recorded since 1982.
MEPS did predict a recovery during the second half of the year due to inventory building ahead of higher prices resulting from an increase in the cost of nickel. Alloy surcharges are likely to increase, according to MEPS. |

ITC Votes To Continue China OCTG Cases The U.S. International Trade Commission
(ITC) voted unanimously on May 22 that there is a reasonable indication that a U.S. industry is threatened with material injury by reason of imports of oil country tubular goods from China that are allegedly subsidized and sold in the U.S. at less than fair value. As a result, the U.S. Department of Commerce will continue to conduct its countervailing duty and antidumping investigations on imports of these products from China, with its preliminary countervailing duty determination due on or about July 2, 2009, and its preliminary antidumping determinations due on or about September 15, 2009.

Tech Tip #23 by Gregg Marshall
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.
When I was in high school, Dad suggested I take a typing class. The reward for the class was a manual typewriter, what we used in first year typing. Then I decided that a second year of "college prep typing" wouldn't hurt and of course for that class we switched to electric typewriters. So it cost Dad an electric at the end of that year.
I'm glad I took typing. Not only did I learn the proper format for formal school reports, I learned the various letter formats (since there were only 3 college prep typing students we were stuck in with the pre-secretary typists). I never broke the habit of looking at my hands, but I did get up to roughly 40 words per minute.
My wife was typing 100+ wpm when we got married.
It takes 3-5 seconds to take your hands off the keyboard and use a mouse to do a command. That's the time it takes a typist to type 3-7 characters.
There are a half dozen commands you should learn that will really save you time that are common to virtually every program.
Of course that assumes you can type. If you can't, it's never too late to take a keyboarding class (what they call typing now). You are destined to spend more and more time typing. What commands? I suggest a couple of formatting commands, one selection command, and three copy and paste commands:
-
Ctrl-B to start or end bold
-
Ctrl-U to start or end underline
-
Ctrl-A to select all everything in a document
-
Ctrl-C to copy the selected text/file to the clipboard
-
Ctrl-X to cut (copy the selected text/file to the clipboard then delete it)
-
Ctrl-V to paste the clipboard where the cursor is
Learn to type (you will be doing more and more with your computer) and a few commands. You'll have more time for advanced productivity software like solitaire (where I don't use any keyboard commands).

What's The Industry Buzzing About?
One way to tell is to visit the website of Supply House Times
. If you scroll to the bottom of the lead page, you will find lists of the "Most E-Mailed" and "Most Popular Articles" (as measured by visitations). This gives a pretty good feel for what industry citizens regard as important.
For example, as of Thursday, May 28, these were the five "Most E-mailed" articles visited at the Supply House Times website.

Fisher Rotary Actuator
Emerson Process Management introduces the Fisher
® 2052 spring-and-diaphragm rotary actuator. The compact actuator reduces valve/actuator envelope dimensions to provide greater valve installation versatility for both skids and tight processing lines where space is at a premium. The new Fisher 2052 actuator can be installed on rotary-shaft valve bodies for throttling or on-off applications. The actuator linkage features a clamped shaft lever and a single pivot point to reduce lost motion between the actuator and the valve. The result is 0.5% or less typical variability for a Fisher rotary control valve assembly. |

CD Contains Pump Standards The Hydraulic Institute (HI) has announced the release of
ANSI/HI Pump Standards Version 2.1 on CD-ROM. The new and comprehensive CD-ROM is comprised of the complete set of 28 ANSI/HI Standards, five of which have been extensively updated since the release of Version 2.0 in 2005.
Additionally, the CD-ROM includes the first edition of the Controlled Volume Metering Pumps for Nomenclature, Definitions Application and Operation (ANSI/HI 7.1-7.5). Development of the Controlled Volume Metering Pumps Standard was a collaborative effort between American Lewa, Inc., Grundfos Pump Corporation, Iwaki America Inc., McFarland-Tritan, LLC, Milton Roy Americas, Siemens US Filter/Wallace & Tiernan and the Hydraulic Institute.
This new standard is for reciprocating positive displacement pumps that are typically used for the injection of chemical additives, proportional blending of multiple components, or metered transfer of a single liquid. These types of metering pumps are used in applications that require highly accurate, repeatable, and adjustable rate of flow. |
