Nuclear Pipe Leak Raises Concerns (And Opportunities) nuclear_power_plant

The recent episode reported here concerning a leak in a critical piping system at a New York State nuclear power plant reminds us that many of our existing nuclear facilities are nearing the end of their engineered life cycle. Repairing and replacing these critical systems takes on added importance with each passing year. While a matter of concern, this harsh reality also spells plenty of business opportunities for PVF manufacturers and distributors.

For more information about our nuke piping systems, this 2005 report from Battelle Labs provides a detailed, highly technical assessment of the vulnerabilities.

Tech Tip #22 by Gregg Marshall Gregg18a.lowres
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.

Even organized, with 10,000+ files you are going to forget where you might have stored that file with Aunt Sally's favorite cookie recipe.

That's where a local search program comes in handy.

There are two free ones, Google Desktop Search (http://desktop.google.com) and Microsoft Desktop Search ( http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/default.mspx).

Once installed, and given time to build their indexes, you can search your hard drive as easily as you can search the Internet. The words "Aunt Sally cookies" would find your recipe in just a few seconds.

Just as nice, both index your emails. Since I keep all my emails and I send and receive about 40,000 emails a year, that's a lot of emails. With desktop search I can find any of my 200,000 emails. The ability to find that email with a two-year-old policy can be really handy when you get challenged for taking advantage of it.

If Google can find information in 6 billion web pages, your hard drive is a piece of cake.

What's The Industry Buzzing About?bees

One way to tell is to visit the website of Supply House Times . If you scroll to the bottom of the lead page, you will find lists of the "Most E-Mailed" and "Most Popular Articles" (as measured by visitations). This gives a pretty good feel for what industry citizens regard as important.

For example, as of Wednesday, May 6, these were the five "Most E-mailed" articles visited at the Supply House Times website.

Slurry Knife Gate Valve

RedValveSeriesDXwebThe Series DX Slurry Knife Gate Valve from Red Valve is designed especially for heavy slurry applications in the power and mining industries. When the Series DX valve opens, the reinforced elastomer sleeves seal against each other and provide a 100% full port opening, which minimize turbulence that causes wear. The seats isolate and protect all metal parts of the valve from coming in contact with the process.
