A Call To End Stainless Steel Surchargesdollarsign

Economic logic just isn't there, say analysts from the British metals tracking firm MEPS.

Why do the US and EU stainless steelmakers need an alloy surcharge mechanism to set market prices? The answer is that they do not. More than half global output is sold using traditional buyer/seller negotiations to make settlements ... Copper tube and pipe mills in the West do not operate surcharges for their sales - neither do aluminium extrusion manufacturers.

Piping DatabookPiping Databook -  $112.95

Your quick key to time and $-saving pipe & fitting data

Throw out that pile of catalogs, journals, manuals, and battered textbooks. Get ready for a clean desk and tons less aggravation because the answers you used to dig for are right here.

Whether it's the thermal conductivity of insulation materials or a conversion factor for viscosity, sizes and types of metallic or nonmetallic pipe or fitting dimensions, manufacturers' names or that elusive bit of terminology, the Piping Databook will spare you hours of frustrating fact-hunting. It's packed with material that mechanical, chemical, process, and civil engineers, architects, facility managers, installers and operators, HVAC personnel, and other professionals use in designing, planning, specifying, ordering, and problem-solving every day.

Look inside to see how much easier it can be to:

*Specify pipe and components with cost-cutting comparisons of design criteria
*Design systems for new uses with easy-to-find equations, tabular product data, photos, U.S. and international codes and standards
*Select and specify domestic or international materials for piping elements to save time and cost
*Do quick conversions with metric and other fast-lookup tables and charts
*Use tables presented with both customary and metric units
*Find all major manufacturers, suppliers, fabricators, installers, and testing companies at a glance for the part or system you need
*See illustrations of pipes, fittings, parts, and piping specialty items before you order
*Select and specify insulation material and the insulation thickness without making time-consuming calculations
*Find types of pipe supports and hangers; select support spans for metallic and nonmetallic piping systems
*Discover innovations in products, applications, and procedures
*Find abbreviations, acronyms, terminology, professional organizations, computer programs, and so much more.

It's the one guide that puts all the practical answers close at hand. CLICK HERE for more info.

Tech Tip #20 by Gregg Marshall Gregg18a.lowres
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.

I have 13,102 Word, Excel, PowerPoint, text, etc. files at the time I'm writing this.

Fortunately I have a system for keeping them organized.

I know people who would have them all in their My Documents folder, or worse, on their Desktop.  Imagine scrolling through 10,000+ files in a file open dialog!

When I was a rep, I had a folder for each factory we represented. I also had a folder for customers. Inside that folder I had a half dozen folders labeled A-F, G-J, K-N, O-R, S-T, U-Z.  In those folders were folders for each customer. Then inside each factory or customer folder I had a folder for each year.

Now I have a folder for each client. And a folder for the company, one for my personal files, one for each of the various associations I am a member of. Again each folder had folders for each year. Then within the year I may have folders for major projects.

A friend started me creating a folder for each major meeting I was attending. In that folder I would put any agendas, background documents, etc., I receive before the meeting. After the meeting I put any notes, etc. It's a handy tool for people who attend a lot of meetings.

The key to your filing system is to have enough folders to keep any folder from getting too many files (more than say 100). But you don't want so many folders that you have to think about which folder a file should be saved in.

For example, as of Wednesday, April 7, these were the five "Most E-mailed" articles visited at the Supply House Times website.

PVF Data

- 43% -- decrease in volume of the import of cargo containers at the Port of Long Beach in February, compared to Feb. 2008. Containers bound for export were down 37%. Although some of the drop represented smaller ships going to San Pedro Bay, most of the decline was attributed to economic weakness.

- 37.3% -- decline in profit of China's industrial enterprises from January to February 2009, according to the National Bureau of Statistics of China.
