Not In My Backyard!
The federal government has been lavishing tax credits on renewable energy -- $20 billion tacked on by the Obama Administration for 2009 alone to develop energy from wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, biofuels, solar, tidal and waves. According to Industrial Information Resources (Industrial Info),
more than 4,800 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy projects are currently under construction in the U.S., and an additional 149 gigawatts (GW) are in the early development stages.
However, Industrial Info reports that of the projects scheduled to start construction in 2009, only about 29% are expected to move forward on time. Approximately 60% have been delayed and 11% canceled. The main constraint to renewable energy project development these days is permitting, which accounts for about 32% of the project delays.
Many of those delays owe to environmentalists putting up a fuss about projects that might spoil pristine scenery or harm remote ecosystems. For instance, many wind projects have been opposed by groups who cite threats to bird and bat populations. And don't even mention nuclear power with the environmental crowd.
But they're all for saving the planet by reducing fossil fuel consumption. Just keep all that stinkin' alternative hardware away from their backyards. |

Tech Tip #19 by Gregg Marshall
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.
Suffering from email overload? Join the club.
One issue I've noticed helping several people is they have hundreds, in some cases thousands, of emails in their inbox. And a lot of those emails are marked unread.
I don't know how people can operate in that environment. Your goal should be an empty inbox.
There's a well known time management maxim for paperwork-handle it once. Read it, deal with it and either file it (if it's important) or delete it. I file most legitimate emails, using Microsoft desktop search to find them later. Any email I can't deal with immediately (usually only one or two in any day), I put in a folder "To Act On." That folder I scan each day the same time I deal with spam.
To reduce the number of emails you have to deal with, make sure your junk mail filters are turned on. Since they can trap legitimate emails you still need to check the junk mail folder, just in case. But if you sort that folder by who the email is addressed to you can skip looking at any email not sent to your email address(s). If spam gets really out of hand, you might want to ask your hosting service if they can enable a feature called Boxtrapper. It is a simple challenge system that requires any unknown person sending you an email to respond by simply replying to the challenge message.
Of course, if you are so completely behind in your inbox you might consider "email bankruptcy." Set up a temporary rule to respond to any email in your inbox that you can't deal with your email and are deleting all your emails ... Then start over and keep up this time.

What's The Industry Buzzing About?
One way to tell is to visit the website of Supply House Times
. If you scroll to the bottom of the lead page, you will find lists of the "Most E-Mailed" and "Most Popular Articles" (as measured by visitations). This gives a pretty good feel for what industry citizens regard as important.
For example, as of Wednesday, March 25, these were the five "Most E-mailed" articles visited at the Supply House Times website.

Self-regulating Heater Cables
Nelson
Type HLT self-regulating heater cables are suitable for use on pipes, tanks and vessels in the hydrocarbon and chemical industries. Type HLT cabling maintains process temperatures up to 250° F to meet viscosity/fluid requirements. In addition, the cables provide freeze protection of periodically steam-cleaned components, as well as for structural anti-icing. The cables also provide a conductive ground path when installed on non-conductive surfaces, such as plastic or painted pipe. |
