RFID In Mechanical Construction MCERF%20RFID%20Graphic

Measuring the Effectiveness of RFID on Mechanical Contracting Jobsites: A Practical Evaluation  is a worthwhile read for anyone with an interest in making mechanical construction more efficient. It's accessible here on the website of the Mechanical Contracting Education & Research Foundation (MCERF), an arm of the Mechanical Contractors Association of America, one of our industry's finest trade groups.

Browse around the MCERF website and you'll find several other studies worth reading that deal with supply chain issues and more.

Post-Industrial Baloney

A new, hungrier generation of Americans will have to want to reclaim our pre-eminence and change the national attitude. It must be ready to pay off generations of debt rather than borrow, build rather than sue, and drill rather than whine.

Those two sentences capture the essence of this masterful essay by Stanford historian Victor Davis Hanson.

Gregg18a.lowresNEW -- Tech Tips by Gregg Marshall
To help you make the most of the Digital Age.

Oil Prices are going up.  Airfares are going up too (some say faster than oil).

Looking for the best airfare? One of my favorite starting places is ITA Software (http://beta.itasoftware.com). They wrote the Orbitz booking engine.

This site is where they try new ideas.  You know it's unbiased since they don't sell any tickets, just display the fares. Check out their help pages.  They have a "route language" that lets you specify all sorts of things (like connecting through a certain city on a certain airline).

And they have a monthly fare display.  Say you need to go to Toledo sometime in December for 3 days, but you can be flexible when.  They will show a calendar of the lowest fare each day.  I've seen differences of 200% by changing a date by one day.

I then go to the airline website to book (and get the booking bonuses).

Gregg Marshall, CPMR, CSP, is president of Rep Connection Inc. He can be reached by e-mail at gmarshall@repconnection.com, or visit his LinkedIn profile at http://www.linkedin.com/in/greggmarshall.

Modern Engineering Concepts 2008 Webinar Series
Presented by John Siegenthaler, P.E.

This Fall begins the next series of Webinars presenting the latest concepts in modern hydronic heating system design. Each offers a 1.5 Certificate of Completion for Continuing Education and is the fraction of the cost to travel to a live conference.

Cast- Iron Boiler Technology: Past, Present, and Future
September 11 at 1pm ET
Sponsored by: Ray (www.knowsomethingmore.com)

Cast iron boilers have been the backbone of the hydronics industry for decades. Some might suggest that cast-iron boilers are dated and approaching obsolescence relative to newer boilers constructed of other materials. This seminar will show why this is NOT the case. You'll also learn why cast-iron, although it may appear gray or rusty in it's raw form, is really a very "green" material.

The Application of Storage Tanks in Hydronic & Solar Thermal Systems
October 16 at 1pm ET
Sponsored by: Heat Transfer Products (www.htproducts.com)

This Webinar covers a wide range of tank applications and presents technical information on where the tanks are needed, how they are sized, and the best way to pipe them into specific systems. Although storage tanks have been part of some hydronic systems for years, this webinar will present unique and state-of-the-art applications that will help define the future of hydronic and solar thermal systems.

PVF Data

14,289 -- Estimated number of oil wells, natural gas wells and dry  holes completed in the second quarter of 2008, up 8% over the second quarter a year ago, according to the API. API also estimated that U.S. oil and natural gas companies completed some 53% more exploratory wells in the second quarter of 2008 than they did in the corresponding period a year ago, as the industry continues to boost activity in the exploration and production sector.

46.1 -- The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) rebounded almost three points in June, after dropping two points the previous month. However, this is the fifth straight month that the index has remained below the 50 threshold, indicating that business levels at U.S architecture firms continue to deteriorate. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI shows an approximate 9- to 12-month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the June ABI rating was 46.1, up from the 43.4 mark in May (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The inquiries for new projects score was 51.8.
